It’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing color, the air is getting crisp, and children are gearing up for Halloween. As you prepare your home for trick-or-treaters, don’t forget to think about safety while everybody gets to enjoy the spooky season;

  • Make sure all lights, decorations, and candles are switched off and extinguished before you go to bed or leave the house. A single spark can quickly turn into a dangerous fire.
  • Keep flammable materials like paper and fabric decorations away from heat sources like candles, fireplaces, and heaters.
  • Be careful when cooking Halloween treats. Don’t leave the kitchen unattended while cooking.
  • Keep an eye on children while they’re trick-or-treating. If they’re carrying any sort of decoration or light as part of a costume, make sure they walk carefully and don’t swing around.
  • Inspect your child’s costume before they go out. Make sure it’s not too long or loose fitting, so they won’t trip, and that it’s made of flame-resistant materials.
  • Be mindful of bonfires or those stockpiling fuel for a fire, exciting as they may appear to a child there’s always a risk attached.
  • Ensure your smoke alarm is working (something you should check every month as a minimum!).
  • Check that all doors and windows are securely locked, at times like bank holidays we can all too easily find ourselves a little more relaxed as we catch up with family and friends.
  • Remember that with clocks going back it’s going to be darker in the evenings so double-check any lighting you might have around driveways or porches so both you and any visiting trick-or-treaters can make their way to your door.

By following these simple fire safety tips, you can help ensure a fun and safe Halloween for everyone.

Happy Halloween!
